California Car Shipping
California is one of the busiest car shipping markets in the country. Nearly 40 million people, four major metro areas, and three national freight corridors running straight through the state — I-5 north to south, I-10 east to Arizona, and I-80 out of the Bay Area toward the Midwest.
That volume works in your favor. Carriers run California lanes constantly, which usually means shorter waits and competitive rates. What takes more planning is the paperwork at the other end, and this page covers both.
How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car to or from California?
Distance drives most of it. A short run to Arizona or Nevada costs far less than a coast-to-coast haul to Florida or New York, and the per-mile rate falls the further you go.
Beyond distance, your price moves with vehicle size, whether you choose open or enclosed transport, whether the car runs, the time of year, and how much notice you give. Rates also shift week to week with fuel and with how many trucks happen to be running your lane.

What’s Different About Shipping a Car in California
California has more state-specific rules affecting vehicle owners than almost anywhere else. None of them change the shipment itself, but several change what happens once the car arrives — and they are much easier to plan for than to fix.
You have 20 days to register
New California residents are generally required to register a vehicle with the DMV within 20 days of establishing residency. That is a shorter window than most states, and the clock starts when you arrive — not when your car does.
If you are flying ahead and shipping the car behind you, factor that in. A vehicle that takes eight days to arrive has already used up much of the window before you can start the process.
Smog check and CARB emissions
Most vehicles being registered in California for the first time need to pass a smog check, and an out-of-state certificate generally will not be accepted — the test has to happen in California, after the car arrives. Fully electric vehicles are exempt. Newer gasoline vehicles are often exempt from the test itself but pay a smog abatement fee instead.
There is a second, bigger issue that catches people out. California enforces its own Air Resources Board emissions standards, which are stricter than the federal ones. Some vehicles built to federal or 49-state specifications cannot be registered in California at all.
Check your vehicle’s emissions label before you ship, not after. It is usually under the hood and will indicate whether the car meets California or 50-state standards. Discovering the problem once the car is in Los Angeles is a considerably more expensive way to find out.
Rules change, and exemptions depend on vehicle age, type and how you acquired it. Check the current requirements with the California DMV or the Bureau of Automotive Repair before you book.
Wildfire season and the Sierra passes
Two seasonal factors affect California transit more than weather does in most states.
Wildfire season, broadly late summer through fall, can close or restrict major corridors including stretches of I-5 and routes through the interior. Closures are usually short but they are unpredictable, and a carrier holding rather than running through an active fire zone is doing the right thing.
Winter affects the Sierra passes. I-80 over Donner and the routes east toward Nevada see chain controls and occasional closures from roughly November through March. If your route runs east out of Northern California in winter, build in a couple of extra days.
Carrier availability by region
California is really several markets. The Los Angeles to San Francisco corridor along I-5 is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the country, which usually means competitive rates and short pickup windows in the metro areas.
Far Northern California, the eastern Sierra and the desert interior are a different picture. Fewer carriers pass through, so pickups take longer to assign and may carry a distance surcharge. If you are in one of those areas, meeting a driver in a larger town nearby often costs less and happens sooner than waiting for a truck to come to you.
Shipping a Car Between California and Hawaii
This is one of the most common California shipping questions, and it is worth being clear about because the numbers you will see quoted online vary wildly.
A car going between California and Hawaii travels by ocean freight for the sea portion. The vehicle is delivered to a West Coast port — usually in the Los Angeles, Oakland or San Diego area — and an ocean carrier handles the crossing. Timelines are measured in weeks rather than days once you account for port scheduling, sailing time and processing at the other end.
It is a genuinely different service with different paperwork, and it costs substantially more than a road move of similar distance. Anyone quoting you a Hawaii figure lower than a mainland cross-country route is either misinformed or quoting only part of the job.
If your move involves Hawaii, tell us at the quote stage so we can set out what is actually involved.
How Long Does It Take?
Two separate clocks. The pickup window is the wait between booking and a truck collecting your car. Transit is the drive itself.
Rough transit times once loaded, from California:
| Destination | Approximate distance | Typical transit |
| Arizona, Nevada | 400–600 miles | 1–2 days |
| Oregon, Washington | 600–1,200 miles | 2–3 days |
| Texas, Colorado, Utah | 1,200–1,500 miles | 3–4 days |
| Illinois, Minnesota | 2,000–2,200 miles | 5–7 days |
| Florida, Georgia, New York | 2,300–2,900 miles | 7–10 days |
| Hawaii | By sea | Weeks, not days |
Estimates based on how the network normally runs, not guarantees. Weather, road closures and mandatory driver rest all move the number. If you have a date you cannot miss, mention it when you request a quote.
Open or Enclosed in California?
Open transport is right for most California shipments and it is what the large majority of customers choose. Your car travels on the same kind of multi-car trailer you see on I-5 every day.
California does have an unusually high concentration of classic, luxury and exotic vehicles, particularly around Los Angeles and Orange County, and enclosed transport is worth the difference for those. It is also worth considering for a car with fresh paint or a route crossing the Sierra in winter, where road salt reaches the underside.
If your car is a daily driver in a factory color, open transport is the sensible choice and we will tell you so.

How It Works
- Get a quote with both ZIP codes, the vehicle’s year, make and model, whether it runs, and your earliest pickup date.
- Your shipment is matched to a carrier running your route. Every carrier is checked for active FMCSA operating authority, current insurance and a clean recent safety record.
- The driver calls ahead. You walk the car together and record its condition on the Bill of Lading before anything is loaded. Photograph everything first.
- Your car travels secured on the trailer. You can reach the driver directly.
- At delivery, inspect against your pickup photos before signing.
More detail on the process is on our door-to-door car transport page.
